PHOTOS: Owner Operators at Let’s Truck CMC Live Wowed By Ultracapacitor Crank Test

A few weeks ago I was in Council Bluffs, Iowa for CMC Live, the annual event featuring Kevin Rutherford of Let’s Truck. Nearly 400 Let’s Truck members attended from all over the U.S. and Canada for this week-long training event that teaches professional truck drivers how to run an independent operator business. There were training sessions by Kevin Rutherford himself, other industry experts, keynote speakers and a vendor fair.
I had the opportunity to speak to an audience of drivers at a luncheon about the business advantages of the Maxwell Engine Start Module’s (ESM) ultracapacitor technology for truck starting. I don’t like standing behind a podium like a professor. I walked through the audience and started by asking, "Does anyone here own the Maxwell Engine Start Module?” Three men stood up and gave testimonials to how the ESM has made a significant difference for their businesses in terms of worry-free starts and uptime. They also commented on Maxwell’s "gold standard support,” which made me proud to hear since Maxwell Technologies strives to meet customer expectations when it comes to service and support.
Another highlight of the show was performing a crank test in the Bootcamp. We used a Class 8 truck set up with three lead-acid batteries and one ESM to demonstrate how the ESM can start the truck repeatedly. We turned the engine over and shut it down 9 times in a row. Using a multimeter, I showed the audience how the ESM became depleted of energy—down to 8 volts—and can still start the engine. Most drivers are surprised when they see this because they are accustomed to lead-acid batteries that could never perform this way. The attendees also got to watch the quick recharge of the ESM back to 15 volts, which took only 12 minutes.
It was a great event and I enjoyed questions from attendees who were impressed by the ESM’s ultracapacitor technology. For those who are interested in purchasing the product and taking their businesses to the next level, you can purchase it at the Let’s Truck store.
Thanks to Kevin Rutherford and the Let’s Truck team for putting on such an educational event and bringing truckers together to network and learn about best business practices.
