California deals with the duck curve problem

California deals with the duck curve problem

In California, grid operators capture the sun’s rays for solar power. But too much solar power adoption results in duck curves: During the day when there is excess solar, there is also a deep dip in demand, followed by a steep increase of demand in the evening when solar is not available. To help address this problem, researchers say that electric vehicle (EV) charging should be scheduled to charge in the middle of the day versus in the evening. Greentech Media provides the details.

India aiming for clean energy mark with national policy

The Government of India announced a national wind-solar policy with the aim to promote new renewable energy projects and the hybridization of existing projects. India’s goal is to achieve 175 gigawatts of installed capacity from renewables by 2022. The total renewable power it has installed today is approximately 70 gigawatts. The plan also permits the use of energy storage in hybrid projects to reduce variability and optimize output. For more details, see this article by The Economic Times.

Study released by U.S. GAO charts advantages, challenges to deploying energy storage

The U.S. Government Accountability Office released a study that outlines how energy storage can help address supply disruptions, provide peak capacity, provide backup power during a power outage, and defer the need for transmission/distribution upgrades. The study also analyzes factors that affect the deployment of energy storage and policies that address the deployment of storage systems.
