Journey to the New 3-Volt Cell: A Thank You to Employees, Customers

Last week, Maxwell released its new 3-volt, 3,000-farad ultracapacitor cell. The 3-volt cell is an exciting and significant addition to our K2 large ultracapacitor cell product line because it sets a new standard in energy and power density and continues Maxwell’s leadership in ultracapacitor innovation and excellence.
I’d like to extend my thanks to the team of employees who worked diligently on the 3-volt cell. From our engineers and materials scientists to our quality and operations personnel—the talent, dedication and team spirit of our employees is the reason why Maxwell continues to lead the way in providing the energy storage industry with top quality ultracapacitor technology.
To our existing customers—thank you for your continued patronage. We value our business partnerships and look forward to adding more value to your energy storage systems with the 3-volt cell. It’s key to note that the 3-volt cell maintains the same typical life performance criteria as our 2.7-volt cells, with the added benefit of increased power capability—a 31% increase over the 2.7-volt cell and a 16% increase over the 2.85-volt cell. This means that current customers in the transportation, wind and grid markets can either increase available power and energy in the same volume or significantly cost-optimize their system designs with fewer cells or modules while maintaining the same power and energy.
The 3-volt cell also features Maxwell’s DuraBlueTM Advanced Shock and Vibration Technology, which means customers have the advantage of hundreds of thousands of duty cycles without the performance snags caused by shock and vibration. The 3-volt cell, along with Maxwell’s entire line of ultracapacitors, is flexible in that the cells can work alone or in tandem with batteries to cover the demands of peak loads.
The 3-volt cell is our latest milestone on the journey toward achieving a more reliable, energy-efficient world. We look forward to continuing the journey with new and existing customers to achieve the next level of reliability and energy efficiency in energy storage.
