On the grid, a reserve of power must be instantaneously ready to respond to a transmission outage/failure. This reserve commonly comes in the form of natural gas fired peaker plants. These plants are run in idle mode (consuming fuel) so that they can ramp to full power rapidly. Instead of operating a peaker, Maxwell Ultracapacitors can supply rapid back-up power as a "bridge” to maintain operations until a more efficient, non-idling back-up generation source is brought on line. This enables generators to work at optimum power output, minimize idle capacity, reduce plant wear and tear, and defer construction of new peakers.
