Application Brief: Ultracapacitor Grid Energy Storage for Frequency Response

Sudden imbalances between generation and load can cause frequency variations that risk stable delivery of electricity within the electrical utility system. Rapid growth in the integration of intermittent renewable generating resources combined with the retirement of fossil and nuclear plants means that the grid has less inertia (rotating mass) to maintain frequency. When the frequency deviates outside of controlled setpoints, there is an increased risk for system tripping and power outages.
